Avoid Fraud With These Dos & Don'ts
Do: Be observant when using card readers

Look for wobbly parts and malfunctioning screens as these may indicate the presence of a card skimmer. Contact us immediately if you insert a card into a suspicious card reader.

Do: Know your daily balance for your accounts

We offer free 24/7 online account access to keep track of all your transactions easily from home or your phone.

Do: Check your credit

Identity thieves are hard at work opening accounts in the names of innocent consumers (YOU)! Every consumer in the US is entitled to receive a copy of their credit report once a year. Get started here: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action.

Do: Watch out for fraudulent emails/texts

Scammers send out emails and texts to members stating that someone from their financial institution has stolen their money and they need to call immediately. If you ever receive a suspicious message from us, exit the email or text and call us directly at 800.728.8943 or 260.471.8336.

Do: Choose strong passwords

An offense can only be as strong as its defense. The best passwords are a minimum of 8 characters and contains a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Make sure it is something you remember and do not use on other sites, like social media or email.

Don’t: Just download apps from anywhere

There are many unlicensed banking apps out there. Today, many popular smartphone apps appear harmless but contain risky code. If you need to access your accounts online, get the Partners 1st app from the app store.

Don’t: Believe everything you hear or read

Fraudsters love to catch people when their resistance is down and frequently attach a sense of urgency to their requests. If someone calls or texts you with “a very important message”, don’t pick up or respond. Place a separate call to us directly to assess the situation.

Don’t: Talk to unknown callers

If you don’t recognize the phone number, don’t answer. Fraudsters are aggressive and there are many tools to synthesize human voice now. Don’t give away a sample of yours. If you do inadvertently answer, do not give out any sensitive information like your account number. We have this information on file and won’t ask you for it. Also, do not agree to anything – there are way they can use a “yes” to lock you into unwanted services.

Don’t: Store card numbers on merchant sites

A breach on any site can send your card data straight to the dark web. Use Visa Checkout or a digital wallet, like Apple Pay, instead to protect sensitive card data. Also, always look for the little lock in your browser window or if the beginning of the website bar says https:// to ensure that a webpage is secure.

Don’t: Click on unexpected links

If you receive a link in an email or text, do not click on it! Scammers often embed malware into these links. When you click on it, they have access to your information. To determine if the sender is safe, check the accuracy of the message. Oftentimes, scammers have typos and grammatical errors in their messages. Also, if the scammer is spoofing, or disguising the text or email as person or business entity that you know, contact them directly (not by clicking on a link in the message) to ask if they sent you the message.

Don’t: Access your account using public WiFi

Oftentimes, public WiFi is not secure. The sites you visit and information you release is easy pickings for anyone else using that WiFi.

Don’t: Give out sensitive information

We will never call you and ask for your account information. We have that information safely and securely stored in our database. If you encounter someone suggesting you need to give out this information urgently, call us immediately at 800.728.8943 or 260.471.8336.
